Everything We Know About Joker 2

When word went around in 2017 that a standalone Joker film outside of the DC Extended Universe exploring the Clown Prince of Crime’s origin story was in the works, there was plenty of doubt as to how it would fare, critically and commercially.  Fast forward two years and a sprinkle of genius from Todd Philips and Joaquin Phoenix later, Joker went on to gross over $1 billion USD at the box office, becoming the first R-rated film to do so. It also earned 11 nominations at the Oscars, wining in 2 highly-coveted categories – Best Actor and Best Original Score.

In June 2022, Director Todd Phillips on Instagram shared an image of the script for the sequel along with a photo of actor, Joaquin Phoenix reading it. The sequel is officially titled Joker: Folie d Deux, which translates to “madness for two”, and is co-written by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver

Here’s all we know about the sequel so far:

What is Joker 2 about?

The details of the sequel have largely been kept under wraps, but it’s rumored to take place in Arkham State Hospital where the Joker was being transported to at the end of the first film.

In Batman: The Animated Series, Harley Quinn’s first meeting with the Joker was as his therapist while he was incarcerated in Arkham. With Harley Quinn being introduced in the sequel, the rumors do seem plausible but we’ll have to wait to find out for sure.

Who will star in the sequel?

As expected, Joaquin Phoenix will be reprising his role as the titular Joker. Joining him is Lady Gaga who is set to debut as yet another on-screen iteration of the infamous Harley Quinn.

After several rumors, it was confirmed that Zazie Beetz will also be reprising her role from the first film as Sophie Dumond, the form her character will take in the sequel is yet unknown.

Also set to join the expanding cast are Brendan Gleeson best known for playing Allaster Moody in the Harry Potter movies, Catherine Keener (Get Out, Adams Project), and Jacob Lofland (Maze Runner), among others.

Will the Joker movies ever connect with Matt Reeves Batman, another standalone DC movie?

So far, the likelihood of a shared universe with Matt Reeves’ The Batman and the rest of the DCEU seems very unlikely as all appear to exist as three different arms of the DC film Universe running concurrently.

Though nothing has been said on the matter, Jared Leto still remains the Joker in the DC Extended Universe and Barry Keoghan after his cameo at the end of The Batman  remains the Joker in future Matt Reeves movies.

But if 2021 Spider-Man: No Way Home taught us anything, it’s to never say never.

There’s an official release date

Joker: Foile a Deux is expected to hit theatres on October 4, 2024 with production set to begin in December.
