Short Story: The Rebound

The first time I heard of the word “rebound” was in my 200 Level in school. I didn’t know what it meant until I found myself as one. Well, it did while being served hot premium breakfast with a spice of public disgrace.

I had newly moved to Sagamu Campus from Ago – Iwoye and was church hunting.

My best friend and I at the time visited a couple of school fellowships looking for a good one and mind you, we also wanted the one with cute guys.
A particular fellowship organized free classes.

“Biochemistry” and “Physiology”, and that was where I met this guy. Tall, not dark but handsome and his voice was perfect that sometimes I got lost in thought daydreaming about what it’d be like to be his babe. “A medical student and a Pharmacy student”.

Hearing his name alone made me happy, oh Romeo. I remember a time I prayed to God to give me a sign about him being my Boo. Lo and behold, I was in class that evening when he asked for a pen, a couple of us raised our pens but he picked mine.

I felt butterflies fluttering in my stomach as I bit my lower lip to hide a smile because it felt like an answered prayer.
He didn’t return my pen but he apologized for forgetting and gave me an extra pen.
“What a sweet, calm, and romantic guy.” I thought to myself.

I told my friend I had a crush on him and she wouldn’t stop teasing me about him, calling me “Mrs . P” his surname, and every time she did, I pretended to get pissed but deep down I was wild with Joy.

There was this particular evening we met at the school gate, I had just relaxed my hair and rolled it up into curls. ” Is this your natural hair?.. it’s so nice”. He said with a big smile on his face, and that night, I couldn’t sleep as his words danced through my thoughts.

And as nature would have it , we started bumping into each other more often till we got talking, and he got my number…
