Awoniyi, a Super Eagles forward, signs with Nottingham Forest for a club-record sum.

The 24-year-old agrees to a five-year deal worth reportedly £17 million with newly promoted Forest.
Awoniyi scored 20 goals in 43 games in all competitions last season, becoming Forest's first addition after their promotion back to the Premier League.

Awoniyi, who began his career at Liverpool, joined Union Berlin permanently in July 2021 after a season-long loan.

After joining Liverpool in 2015, he never played for the first team and spent the majority of his six years with the Merseyside club on loan.

Cooper, the manager of Forest, stated that the team had been keeping a close eye on Awoniyi over the past few months.

“It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League,” said Awoniyi.

“Having spoken to [Forest boss] Steve Cooper about our ambitions and looking at Forest, with its great history, it’s a club that I want to be part of.”

Awoniyi led Union Berlin to a fifth-place finish, which assures the team Europa League play for the first time since the 2001–02 season, and was the Bundesliga's sixth-highest scorer last season with 15 goals in 31 league games.

“There’s been a lot of interest of Taiwo from other Premier League clubs, and other clubs across Europe, so we’re delighted he’s chosen Nottingham Forest,” Cooper said.

“He’s a player who we really believe in and we look forward to him going on to fulfil his potential and become a top Premier League striker with Nottingham Forest.”

The striker has made four appearances since making his senior debut for Nigeria in October and scored his country's first goal against Sudan in January at the Africa Cup of Nations.

This summer, Forest is negotiating to sign center defender Moussa Niakhate, 26, from Mainz, and goalkeeper Dean Henderson, 25, on loan from Manchester United.
